How Do You Prep a Brand New Mask to Prevent Fogging?

New mask prep is not optional — it's the single most impactful thing you can do for long-term fog prevention. Skip it and you'll be fighting the factory film on every dive, no matter how much defog you apply.

Toothpaste method (most recommended). Apply a small amount of plain white toothpaste — paste, not gel, no whitening formula, no abrasive particles — to the inside of each dry lens. Use your finger to rub it vigorously in circular motions for 3 to 5 minutes, covering the entire lens surface including the very edges and corners. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water. Repeat this process a minimum of three times before the first use. Most guides who recommend this method specify "three times" precisely because once or twice doesn't fully remove the film — it reduces it but leaves enough residue to keep fogging. Three rounds breaks through it.

Lighter/burn method (faster, requires care). This method works by burning off the silicone film rather than abrading it away. Hold a lighter's flame about 1–2 cm below the inside of the lens and move it continuously — never stop in one spot. The lens surface will turn black as the film burns away. Let the glass cool completely (it gets very hot), then wipe away the black residue with a clean cloth and rinse. Do not attempt this on plastic lenses, lenses with coatings or anti-fog films applied, or prescription lenses — heat will damage all of these. For standard tempered glass only. The risk of cracking the lens from thermal shock is real if you overheat a single spot; the continuous movement of the flame prevents this.

The risk is residue — if not rinsed well, soap can cause significant eye irritation. Baby shampoo is preferred specifically because it's formulated to be non-irritating even if rinsed imperfectly.

5. Anti-fog wipes. Pre-moistened wipes with defog solution are convenient and eliminate the spray bottle. Less common but useful for travel. Performance is similar to commercial drops.

Yes — for new tempered glass lenses specifically, burning is the fastest and most complete method for removing the factory film. The heat breaks down the silicone residue in a way that toothpaste (which abrades it off gradually) can take multiple sessions to achieve. Done correctly, one pass with a lighter treats the entire lens in about 90 seconds.

The safety caveats are real and worth restating: this technique applies only to tempered glass. Plastic lenses, anti-reflection coatings, UV coatings, and prescription lenses will be permanently damaged by heat. If your mask has any of these, use the toothpaste method exclusively.   • Using harsh cleaning products on the lens or skirt. Alcohol, acetone, and strong solvents can remove lens coatings and degrade silicone skirts. Mild dish soap, baby shampoo, or toothpaste are the appropriate cleaning agents for every part of the mask.
